Critical Reviews:

Review By Roger Ebert:

http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-departed-2007

This review is very positive and discusses the directing of The Departed very well. Roger Ebert, discusses the similarities in both The Departed, which is a remake, and the original Internal Affairs. However, even though he discusses the fact that it is a remake, they still create a fantastic movie. In conclusion, I think Roger felt that the directing is what made the movie and he constantly praises Martin Scorsese for his re-creation. He does praise the actors for pulling off their roles fantastically, but still he does credit Martin Scorsese for making it such a hit.

Review By Marc Salov:

This review is much like the first one however they don't discuss the story line as much as they compare it to Martin Scorsese other magnificent work, such as Goodfellas.  Dicaprio is given a big shout out and credited largely as they discuss the fact that this is the third time he has worked with Scorcsese. This is praising him for being a brilliant actor, as not a lot of people get the opportunity to work with a director like this more than a few times, other than Robert De Niro. And to be on the same level as De Niro is a huge accomplishment, and I think Dicaprio is really praised for this.

Review By Ty Burr:

This reviewer discusses the acting more than anything in this review on The Departed.  Ty picked out specific quotes which he liked and felt had an impact certain scenes. For example, 'I don't want to be a product of my environment -- I want my environment to be a product of me." I think Ty felt felt the delivery of this lines from the actors is what this movie a classic. Ty does credit each actor and applaud them for them performance.

Review By Dana Stevens:
http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/movies/2006/10/of_moles_and_men.html

This review is not like the others I have analysed. This is because, Dana criticises the movie quite a bit rather than praise it. She feels that the film may be too overrated.  However, although she criticises the storyline, she still gives credit where it is due to DiCaprio and Matt Damon. She even says it herself how much she dislikes both of the actors, but their acting couldn't be disliked in this movie.

Review By Mick LaSalle:

http://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/REVIEW-Scorsese-scores-with-cop-drama-that-s-2487330.php

This reviewer here discusses how The Departed was a good 'attempt'  at trying to create a crime movie. This review also slightly implies that Marting Scorsese has lost his touch with directing movies. From what I have read, it seems as though Mick is really disappointed by Scorsese and expected better from the director. He doesn't discuss the actors as much as he talks about Marting Scorsese.

Audience Reviews:

This review touches less on the directing and storyline and they focus the whole review on the performance from each lead actor. It is clear that the reviewer feels that Jack Nicholson carried the movie due to his experience in acting. It seems  that to this reviewer feels that without having a good performance then the film won't be good.

This review is much like most of the critic reviews. The reviewer praises Martin Scorsese for making a master piece. The reviewer does not mention any actors names and I think this is due to them feeling as though it is the director who deserves the credit for making the movie come out like how it did.

The reviewer here seems utterly disappointed with everything about the movie. He first starts off with the directory of the movie and starts to criticise Scorsese for having a poor approach to tell the story here. They then move onto discussing the camera work editing for a certain scene in the movie. The fault these two things for messing up the main aspect of the film which is keeping up with the funerals coming up.

This reviewer found the movie so good that they felt the needed to write a review after years. Once again everyone, meaning the lead actors and director, is credited for uniting together and making this movie so memorable. I think the reviewer The Departed a great movie due to it being the next gangster movie directed Scorsese after Goodfellas. So, they felt it lived up to what was made previously.

This reviewer spoke a lot on the delivery of the storyline. They felt that the storyline was told in a fantastic way and thought that what was being portrayed in the film really spoke out and displayed what happens in reality. They also credit the cast a lot for making the movie such a success.

Analysis:

I think in general, The Departed recieved mixed reviews. However, it certainly got more positive reviews than negative. I think a lot of the reviewers felt the same way, them being an audience member or a critic. They all felt that it is due to the director, Martin Scorsese, that the film was so likeable and a movie that you can watch over and over again. Some people disliked the movie due to the performance aspect of things. For example, Ray Winstones attempt at doing an American accent was mentioned a lot by reviewers. However, overall I think the movie done really well and won alot of peoples vote on being a great movie.

Quantitative Box Office Research: My Favorite Film

THE DEPARTED

USA

The above findings show the box office figures for USA. The highest amount made was around 130 million in dollars and around 90 million in pounds. The figures alone emphasize that  the film was very successful and this meant they had done well financially and had covered the budget they had used which was 90 million. The reason why this film was very successful was because the film was located in USA which meant that american viewers were more keen in watching it.

UK

The above figures show the box office figures in the UK. The most amount made in the UK was £12,576,260. Although it was an american film it also appealed to the people in the UK as it was in english. this is why they made a lot in the UK. Also as you can see in the film we see Leonardo DiCaprio who is a famous actor and is known worldwide for his films, this is maybe another reason why it is high in the UK.

Mexico

The above image tells you the box office figure for mexico, as you can see from the above picture shows that the highest amount made in mexico was £1,353,611.70. This is a low amount but very high considering that in mexico they do not speak English, as they speak Spanish, however they may add Spanish subtitle so Mexican people understand.

Australia
The above image shows you the box office figures in Australia , as you can see from the above the highest amount made was 5 million pound this is amount is a high figure, however it made a lot of money because in Australia most of the people speak English, this means that more of people would understand the film and also they may know the famous characters from the film.

Netherlands

The above figures are from the IMDb shows you the box office figure in Netherlands, as you can see from the image that the most made in Netherlands was around 1 million pound, this is the smallest amount compared to the other country's, however i believe this is because in Netherlands most of the people speak in German as it is in Germany, however i guess they put in subtitle which helped some people understand the film.

Analysis
From my research i have gained information about the box office figures. Overall from the box office figures i can tell that the film has been successful as the films budget was 90 million pound in dollars if you convert that to pounds it's roughly around 60 million pound, this tells me that they have been very successful as they made more than that. Each individual country has different box office figures because they all have there unique reasons, for example the most of the money they made was in USA  because that's were most of the audience who it appealed to were as it was filmed there, this is why the made the most there, however in the mexico they didn't make as much because they speak Spanish which means them having language barrier although them having Spanish subtitles. Overall in my judgement i believe that this film is very successful as they made a lot of revenue from it.
